Team Akwa Ibom Wins First Gold Medal at 2nd Niger Delta Games


Team Akwa Ibom recorded their first Gold medal at the 2nd Niger Delta Games on Sunday, as Taekwondo athlete Stella Gideon produced a dominant performance in the women’s -49kg final.

Stella Gideon defeated Edo State’s Esohe Aigbe with an emphatic score of 29–5 to claim the top prize. Her outstanding display earned Team Akwa Ibom their first Gold medal of the Games and boosted the state’s medal tally to eight.

The victory came after Team Akwa Ibom had earlier won seven medals on the opening day of events, consisting of three Silver and four Bronze. Stella Gideon’s triumph marked a major breakthrough for the team as they continued their quest for top honours at the Games.

Team Akwa Ibom athletes will be in action across several Sports on Sunday, including Basketball, Volleyball, Boxing, Chess, Taekwondo, Handball, Traditional Wrestling, Para Powerlifting, Table Tennis, Swimming, Tennis, Wrestling and Athletics. Competitions will take place at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium and the Etete Sports Centre in Benin City, Edo State.

With the first Gold medal secured, Team Akwa Ibom will be eager to build on the success and increase their medal haul as the Games continue.
