Omotola’s New Movie Set to Change the Narrative How Nigerian Films Portray Motherhood

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, who is directing her first film, "Mother's Love," criticizes Nollywood for lacking mother-daughter tales. View the cast and the release date for 2026.

For the first time, veteran Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde is directing with a clearer, more targeted style. The screen icon highlighted a clear void in the industry's portfolio during a recent interview on Yanga FM: the actual nature of mother-daughter relationships.

“We don’t have too many films that explore or showcase the relationship between mothers and daughters,” Omotola said during the interview, describing the subject as something deeply personal to her.

Speaking honestly about raising her first daughter, she admitted she had only one mode at the time, which was discipline. “I didn’t do a good job,” she said plainly, explaining that she understood motherhood strictly through control, not softness or emotional openness.

Adebisi, the protagonist of Mother's Love, is a sheltered young woman from a privileged household whose life is influenced by her strict father's supervision. She experiences her first taste of independence at NYSC, when being away from home enables her to start figuring out who she is outside of her family's expectations. She befriends a young man from a more humble upbringing and begins to view the world and herself in a different way as a result.

Adebisi's disobedience, however, is not the film's central emotional theme. It's her mom. Long after being portrayed as calm and obedient, she gradually shows resolution when her daughter's future and safety are under jeopardy. Mother's Love becomes less about young independence and more about maternal sacrifice, unsaid trauma, and the emotional costs of surviving in a patriarchal household as secrets come to light and long-buried anguish emerges.
