The Christmas Unplugged Festival reached a new height of cultural brilliance on 9 December 2025 when Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area stepped forward with an exceptional display of tradition and historical pride. Their presentation became a defining moment of the season, reminding visitors and residents of the depth of Akwa Ibom heritage.
Ibesikpo Asutan, established on 1 October 1996, is rooted in the lineage of Asikpo Nnakada of Usakedet. With seventy nine villages located between Uyo, Nsit Atai, Nsit Ibom, and Nsit Ubium, the area has long been known for its fertile land, vibrant trade culture, and strong Christian foundation that dates back to 1917. These elements remain central to the identity of the people.
During his address, Executive Chairman Rt. Hon. Evang. Edidiong Inyang reaffirmed the community’s unity, calling them “a broom that cannot be broken.” He explained the significance of the LGA’s symbols, including the Lion of Asutan Ekpe, the Cow of Ibesikpo, and the Green River, each representing strength, heritage, and life. He also celebrated the legacy of Obong Effiong Eyo, the notable son of Ibesikpo, who suggested the name Akwa Ibom, as confirmed by Akwa Ibom Trending.
The Village Square was filled with guests eager to witness the performance. Among them were the Hon. Commissioner for Budget and Town Planning, Dr. Nsikan Linus Akang, who thanked God for the clear skies and praised Governor Pastor Umo Eno for using the festival to restore unity and cultural pride across the State. Former Speaker, Dr. Aniekan Uko, commended the Governor’s leadership and applauded the Hon. Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Anieti Udofia, for delivering the State’s tourism vision with clarity and commitment.
The performances opened with Asong, the iconic drum known far beyond the borders of Ibesikpo Asutan. Its deep tones set the mood for a series of cultural acts including abiokpo and other expressive displays that showcased the community’s artistry and historical knowledge. Every movement carried meaning. Every rhythm echoed the resilience of their ancestors.
The culinary section of the celebration added even more depth to the event. Visitors enjoyed Editan Etike, Efere Etike, Udep Utim, Ikpafi Ntueni ye Fufu, Oto Mboro, and other delicacies that highlight the community’s rich food culture. The dishes provided a taste of the land and the traditions that continue to shape daily life.
Hon. Elder Stephen Ben Samuel, Royal Fathers, Elder Effiong Essien and wife, Mr. Emmanuel Mbiam, Mr. Ubong Ekpe, and other council members graced the colourful gathering, lending their support to the cultural display.
The climax of the day came with the Ibesikpo Asutan Ekpe performance, a bold and electrifying presentation that captured the attention of the entire Village Square. Their discipline, symbolism, and energy reaffirmed that Akwa Ibom’s cultural expressions remain among the most compelling in Nigeria.
Ibesikpo Asutan Day was more than an event. It was a celebration of identity, unity, and heritage, and a powerful reminder of why Christmas Unplugged has become one of the most admired cultural festivals in the country.
