Mikel Obi, a football star in Nigeria and a former captain of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, has declared his retirement from the game.
"As they say, "all good things must come to an end," and today is that day for my professional football career.
When I reflect on the previous 20 years of my profession, I have to admit that I am quite happy with what I was able to accomplish and, more significantly, the person it helped create.
"Without the continuous support of my family, managers, clubs, coaches, players, and, most importantly, my devoted fans, none of this would have been possible.
"Even on the days when I fell short of your expectations, you continued to encourage me through my highs and lows. I sincerely thank you.
I would also like to encourage anyone who I may have in some way inspired over my career to never give up on their aspirations. Whenever you feel like giving up, just think back to why you started in the first place.
This is not a farewell; rather, it marks the beginning of a new trip and a new chapter in my life. I'm excited about what the future holds, and I'm hoping you'll walk alongside me there. I'm grateful.
