Rivers Utd wins Nigeria Professional Football League, MFM and Kano Pillars up for relegation

Rivers United was named the 2021/22 Nigeria Professional Football League's champion on Sunday. Rivers finished the regular season with 77 points and an overall goal difference of plus 34 after defeating Gombe United 1-0.

Surprisingly, MFM, Kano Pillars, Heartland, and Katsina United decided to relegate after finishing one, two, three, and four places below, respectively. Barring any modifications by the league's administrators, these teams will now compete in the second tier of Nigerian football.

Neysom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, expressed his gratitude by promising each player and official of Rivers United N1 million for winning the season's final game yesterday. He added that the money was not included in the package the state government had prepared for them to receive for becoming champions for the first time in their history.

Many home clubs won their games on the final day of the 2022 Nigeria Professional Football League season, while some teams avoided the drop.
