Rita Dominic at 50: Honoring a Nollywood Icon and Her Iconic Performances

Nollywood icon Rita Uchenna Nkem Dominic celebrated her fiftieth birthday this past weekend, and what a trip it has been!

She has transformed from influencing characters in more than 350 movies to influencing the business behind the scenes. Rita has become an innovator. Let's examine her life, her work, and the unique combination of her skills.

Rita Dominic was born on July 12, 1975, in Mbaise, Imo State, into a prestigious family (her mother was a nurse, and her father was a doctor). She began performing at a young age.
After making her debut in 1998's A Time to Kill, she threw herself into Nollywood headfirst, having studied theater arts at the University of Port Harcourt (class of 1999).

CNN dubbed her a "silver screen icon." She has won multiple awards, including Kenya's Kalasha Award and the AMVCA (comedy and drama).
In addition to her success as an actress, Rita co-founded The Audrey Silva Company (TASC) with Mildred Okwo, releasing popular songs like The Meeting and contributing to the renowned Miss Nigeria contest in Nigeria.
Numerous accolades were bestowed upon her performance, including the AMVCA Best Actress in a Drama (Movie/TV Series) award.
Her subtle depiction of a lady under stress was hailed by critics; little movements like a trembling hand or a steely stare were more powerful than words. Her turn was called "refreshing… bringing the plight of a soldier’s wife to life on screen" by Kemi Filani News.
