Professor Pat Utomi, a political
economist, claimed on Tuesday that the Labour Party has a better structure than
the two major parties in the country, the Peoples Democratic Party and the
ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) (PDP).
Utomi, a Labour party member,
made the remark while a guest on Politics Today on Channels Television.
In the presidential election of
2023, which is only seven months away, he expressed confidence that his party
will easily win.
He said that the Labour Party's
organizational structure was superior to that of the APC and the PDP. The labor
movement and a college of civil society organizations form the foundation of
the Labour Party.
He claimed that the Trade Union
Congress (TUC) and the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) both had political
commissions in each of the federation's states.
In order to ensure that every
polling place is covered, he said, the party will mobilize voters during the
upcoming elections.
Utomi, on the other hand,
denounced a scenario where officials would steal money to influence elections,
a scenario that some have misidentified as political structures.
He added that because the public
wants a new story, the scenario in which politicians buy their way to victory
during elections is changing.
"With the structure that we
have, I am promising that on election day, there are at least 15 individuals
standing up for the third force to support the Labour party candidate in every
voting place in this country," he stated.
Regarding the potential for a
merger with other parties, the leader of the Labour party noted that
discussions are now taking place with a number of political groups, though he
did not name any specific ones.
He criticized the performance of
both the APC and PDP that have ruled Nigeria when asked why he is sure in the
triumph of his party, the Labour Party.
Utomi stressed that Nigerians
expect new confidence from new leadership after pointing out that they were
responsible for making Africa's most populous country bankrupt through
excessive borrowing.
While the Labour party has fielded ex-Anambra State Governor,
Peter Obi as its presidential candidate, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar
emerged as PDP’s flagbearer with ex-Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu to fly
the APC’s flag in the 2023 presidential election.
