The
Best International Act at the 2022 BET Awards was awarded by Temilade Openiyi,
a Nigerian singer better known by her stage name Tems.
On
Sunday night, she made history by becoming the first African woman to win in
the category.
She
rose to international fame in 2021 with to her smash song duet with Wizkid,
"Essence."
The
Canadian musician Justin Bieber collaborated on a remix of Essence, which was
dubbed the "summer song of the year 2021."
Tems
defeated Tayc, Dave, Dinos, Fally Ipupa, Fireboy DML, Little Simz, Ludmilla,
Major League DJz, and Fireboy DML from the UK, France, and Nigeria (France).
"Thank
you so much for this, thank you very much," she said after accepting the
award.
It's
a privilege. I mean, this is my first award event where I'm receiving a prize,
so I just want to take this chance to address every single woman and girl
watching at home, whether they are young, elderly, or anything.
"Things
like this don't happen where I'm from." She added!.
