The Conference of Online Publishers Akwa Ibom State (COOPA) has solicited the support and partnership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, ahead of the maiden edition of the Uyo Social Media Week scheduled for November 19–23, 2025.
The courtesy visit took place on Monday at the NUJ Press Centre, Uyo, where the Chancellor of COOPA, Mr. Utitofon Morgan Ukpong, led members of the association to meet with the state executive council of the NUJ at the State Secretariat of the council Monday 20th October.
In his remarks, Mr. Ukpong thanked the NUJ leadership for the warm reception and congratulated Comrade Nsibiet John on his victory as state chairman. He also commended the immediate past chairman, Comrade Amos Etuk, for his continuous support to the association.
“COOPA will be 10 years old in November, and as part of our anniversary celebration, we are flagging off the Uyo Social Media Week. We seek your endorsement, support, and partnership as we work towards the success of this event,” Morgan said.
He emphasized that the collaboration between mainstream media and online publishers remains vital in strengthening responsible journalism and amplifying authentic local narratives.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Planning Committee for the Uyo Social Media Week, Mr. Darlington Udobong , disclosed that the event themed “Amplifying Local Voices Through Digital Innovation” would hold at Ceedapeg Hotels, Uyo.
According to him, the five-day event will feature masterclasses, poolside conversations, panel sessions, and networking opportunities with seasoned media professionals and digital innovators.
“The event is not just for practitioners in Akwa Ibom, but for those across the country. We want NUJ to make Uyo Social Media Week an official event of the Union. Online practitioners can’t do without the NUJ,” Udobong added.
Responding, NUJ Chairman, Comrade Nsibiet John, commended COOPA for its professionalism and contributions to information dissemination in the state.
“Meeting you feels like a family discussion. The event will be one of the best this year, and I commend COOPA for its continuous efforts in promoting credible media practice. The Union is open to collaboration and will stand by you to ensure success,” Nsibiet assured.
He described the theme of the event as “topical and timely,” noting that the growth of social media has become indispensable in the evolution of modern journalism.
“When online media started in Lagos and Abuja, many didn’t take it seriously, but today, no journalist can ignore the influence of social media,” he said.
Comrade Nsibiet also hinted that the NUJ Press Week would soon be announced, assuring COOPA of inclusion in the line-up of activities.
