Within
the next two years, the UK is expected to host the largest autonomous drone
superhighway in the world. The 164-mile Skyway project, which connects towns
and cities like Cambridge and Rugby, will make use of drones.
It
is a component of a £273 million support package for the aerospace industry
that Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng will announce on Monday.
Drones
are also being used in other initiatives to carry medication throughout
Scotland and mail to the Isles of Scilly.
The
revelation will be revealed by Mr. Kwarteng during the Farnborough
International Airshow, which will take place for the first time in 2019.
He
will claim that the financing will "assist the sector in taking full
advantage of the tremendous development prospects that exist as the globe moves
toward cleaner forms of flight."
According
to Dave Pankhurst, BT's director of drones, Skyway is about scaling up trials
that have been going on around the UK.
One
of the partners in the partnership is BT.
While
this drone capacity has been around for a while, it is still in its infancy as
far as being useful and integrated into society, according to him.
"Therefore,
for us, this is about moving significantly closer to that goal. It will present
a wealth of opportunity."
By
the middle of 2024, Skyway hopes to connect the airspace over Reading, Oxford,
Milton Keynes, Cambridge, Coventry, and Rugby with funding totaling more than
£12 million.
The
government will provide a total of £105.5 million exclusively for initiatives
involving "integrated aviation systems and new vehicle technology,"
such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) like drones.
These
initiatives include a plan to deploy drones to transport mail and medications
on a regular basis to the Isles of Scilly and to dispense medications
throughout Scotland, which may allow certain cancer patients to receive
treatment in their neighborhoods.
There
are numerous possible applications for the superhighway, according to Chris
Forster, chief operating officer of the aviation technology firm Altitude
Angel.
"There's
a huge need to have access to this airspace," he added. "Whether it
be a corporation performing logistics, all the way to the police and medical
deliveries of vaccinations and blood samples."
The
system makes use of sensors that are mounted on the ground and placed alongside
the roadway to track drones in the air in real-time.
A
traffic management system, which functions as a kind of air traffic control for
drones, analyzes this data in order to direct the drones along their routes and
prevent collisions.
The
main worry about crashes, according to Steve Wright, an associate professor of
aircraft engineering at UWE Bristol, occurs not during the flight but rather during
takeoff or landing.
He
explained, "It's about the beginning and end of the flight. "What
happens when you're 10 feet away from them is the issue. I spend most of my
time worrying about that part.
